[Reflection 5: Bye, Felicia—Life in a Post-Baby Boomer World (PATHWAY 2 ASSIGNMENT ONLY)
These days, Baby Boomers, Americans born between 1945-1964, probably aren't anyone's favorite generation. Nonetheless, succeeding generations (Generation X: 1965-1980, Millennials: 1981-1996, and Gen Z: 1997-2012) have lived in a Boomer-driven world for most, or all, of their lives. Though Baby Boomers account for only 20% of the population:
- Baby Boomers account for 49% of Congress
- Four out of the last five US presidents have been Baby Boomers: Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama, and Trump (President Biden is part of the Silent Generation, born between 1928-1945; Vice-President Kamala Harris, born in late 1964, can be considered either a very late Baby Boomer or a very early Gen Xer)
- According to FactSet: "Roughly 80% of S&P 500 companies have Baby Boomer CEOs and approximately one-third of that group is 65 or older ...
- According to NASDAQ: "Americans have roughly $156 trillion in assets ... but half of that wealth—$78.1 trillion—belongs to the Baby Boomers. The rest is spread out across Generation X, the Silent Generation, and Millennials."
- According to Redfin: "Empty nesters take up a lot of large homes because affordability was better when they were young, and there’s no financial incentive to sell now: Most Boomers own their homes free and clear, and most who have a mortgage have a low rate."
- Next to Silent Generation (which is significantly smaller), Baby Boomers are the most conservative generation in America, and are most skeptical of climate change
- They are the generation most likely to spread online misinformation, including conspiracy theories
But Baby Boomers can't live forever. And the next 20 years will see their influence greatly diminish. What then? What do can we expect from a post-Baby Boomer world? What would you expect (and want( from a country and world that was no longer controlled by Baby Boomers?
