[Reflection 1: In the Mix—On the Future of Mixed Race America (Assign 2/12)
President Obama was often lauded as our first Black president, but more accurately, he was our first mixed race president.
That he was viewed as a wholly Black man, when was actually half white, is a reminder of our country's complicated history with race. In fact, President
Obama may very well have provided America a peek at its future. While it is
increasingly clear that by the end of this century, Americans will look markedly different than those of today, mixed race Americans are already changing the racial
landscape of this country. Whether they identify as "mixed race," "biracial," "multiracial," or "multiethnic," according to the 2020 Census, the “Two or More Races” population of the US sits at an estimated 33.8 million—up from nine million in 2010. If, as predicted, America becomes a majority non-white country in the 2040s, how will mixed
race Americans become a driving force in that transformation? With multiple identities to draw from, how will they help redefine what it is to be American?
